Math Happenings

We have a strong start to our math year.  We are in two math groups at the moment and work on separate math skills that will sometimes overlap.  Team Green started with reviewing all of the math tools that can be used to support solving math problems: 100’s chart, number line.  TG was building number sense by using these tools as they solved number riddles.  Team Red has focused on using strategies to add multiple digit numbers.  The team shared and learned to use three different strategies:  adding by place value, adding one number in parts and the Felix method.  TR has also been playing games that support fluency in adding and subtracting 10, 20 and 30. TR also started data collection by recording the outside temperature.  This data will be collected until the end of May when they will plot their information on a graph.

Together-

We took last week to learn how to tell time.  We learned about many different tools used to measure time and what they might be used for.  Most of our practice was done by using an analog clock.  We played many games and labeled our clock to support our learning.  If your child already knew how to tell time they were challenged with elapsed time.  This was a wonderful week for the class to learn as a whole group.  Time will be practiced throughout the year until it is mastered.

We have also started a routine called, 10 minute math, which currently is ” number of the day.”  There is a number on the board and each group has different challenges to work with the number in five minutes time.  TG will show the number as many ways as they are able: writing the word, tallies, cubes, addition equations, subtraction equations.  TR is challenged with writing equations given a specific starting point.  Ex. NOD is 13 they might have a starting point of 5,600.

10 minute math will vary and grow as the year progresses.  This is an excellent way for us to work and learn as a team.
