Word Study

Word study is the study of words and how they work.  There are many categories we will study and have just finished letter/sound relationships.  We looked at beginning and ending blends, consonant and vowel digraphs and r controlled words.  We brainstormed many lists and charts which supported our practice when playing games or working on an activity.  We learned games with words including: crazy8’s, concentration, dominos, sorting, word hunts and made word searches.

One look into a week of word study was a focus on all of the ways to make the long a sound and hers is what we discovered: ay, ey, a-e, ai, eigh, aigh, ea.  They started with a brain dump about all of the words they already knew (harder that they thought because lots of words have the pattern but do not make the right sound), then we spent two sessions hunting for words to add to the list and finally used these wonderful word lists to make a word search (which they have decided to take home as homework for their parents to do).

As a way to celebrate the completion of this section of word study we will be learning pig latin!  Should be lots of fun and very applicable to what they are practicing.
