Shelburne Museum

A big thank you to Lindsay Burnett for Driving our class to the museum and to Sage Bagnato for retrieving us!  Volunteers make it happen!

Shelburne Museum was a rich experience that brought early Vermont to life.  We had four stops on our guided tour.  The first was to the settlers homestead where we learned about how clothes were made, the layout of homes, what was grown in the fields, how supplies were acquired and much more.  We made ice cream the old fashioned way and talked about the different ingredients and where they came from.  Our guide challenged us to find something in every building that was close to the same as something we have now and something that was different.  Our second stop, to the school where we learned how to greet the teacher, how to line up and we had a spelling B.  Third, we stopped at the toy store!  We viewed many toys from early Vermont and we got to play some  yard games.  Finally we landed back at the settlers homestead where we spent time in the barn making candles out of beeswax.  This made for a full morning of learning and making connections to our classroom and what we are learning about Vermont.

We left the barn on an exploration of the grounds.  We visited the jail, the train, the Ticandaroga, the light house, the carousel, the round barn and the art building.  We also snuck in a shuttle ride and a game of tag or two.

I am impressed with the level of manners and interest that were shown at Shelburne Museum.  It makes me very excited for future off-campus happenings.
