March Music Making!

March Music time brings out the Spring-y songs!  Ask your child to teach you the “Garden Song” this month.  We have also continued to check out the language of music on the treble staff,  so we’ve been doing activities to help us remember that the spaces spell “FACE” and the lines tell us “Empty Garbage Before Dad Flips” …. A free game to download is one called “Staff Wars”…. The 2-3’s got up to level 4 on this tricky game with the spaces.  It’s fun to play alone or as a team.  You can download a little zip file for your computer to play at home here; http://www.themusicinteractive.com/downloads.html

We’re also playing a few theater games to gain some new skills with listening,  observation, and working together.

Our sight singing is getting a workout in the singing game “Poison”.  We need a tie-breaking round with this class, as they won the first round,  but I managed to fool them in round two.

On recorders we are trying to firm up our knowledge of nine notes.  Many young players get stuck at this stage, so encouraging them to practice and show you their skills at home is a great help.  If notes are not coming out well, they can consult their rubric to self-assess what they might need.  Practicing at home is a great beginning for learning a band instrument later on,  and we are hoping to start instrumental lessons next year for grades 4 and up!

Before the end of the month, we will be hearing music from two of my favorites,  Mozart and Debussy,  and comparing their beautiful music and deciding who we like best.   Here are links to a couple of samples.  Lovely!!!
