Kicking off our new project on Oceanography!

This week in STEM, the 2/3 class was introduced to their new project on ocean exploration. To kick off the project, we played a trivia game to check for prior knowledge. Then we watched some clips from the documentary Blue Planet, about the deeper parts of the ocean. As we watched the documentary we focused on two questions: How do we explore the deepest parts of the ocean? And, what unique features do organisms that live in the deep ocean have?

Finally, as part of our entry event, we discussed some problems with ocean pollution, and to build off their previous engineering project, they took on an engineering design challenge: to create an invention that could remove pollution from a body of water (the pollution being oil, plastic, and styrofoam). They did a great job coming up with some creative inventions!

Next week we’ll introduce the Driving Question, brainstorm our Need to Knows for the project, and jump into our study on the ocean!
